Nintendo Switch 2 Launches June 5 with 4K Docked and 120Hz Handheld Support

The Nintendo Switch 2, shown here, features a redesigned form factor with upgraded hardware for both handheld and docked gaming.

Nintendo has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will launch on June 5, 2025. The new hybrid console marks a major hardware upgrade over the original Switch, which debuted in 2017. Designed for both portable and docked gaming, the Switch 2 includes significant improvements aimed at enhancing performance, visual quality, and player experience.

The handheld mode now features a 7.9-inch LCD display capable of 1080p resolution with support for HDR10 and refresh rates up to 120Hz. This marks a sharp improvement from the original’s 720p screen and 60Hz limit. The addition of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) aims to reduce screen tearing and improve gameplay smoothness during fast-paced action. When docked, the Switch 2 can output games at 4K resolution with a steady 60Hz refresh rate, positioning it closer to the performance standards of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

The new Joy-Con controllers feature improved ergonomics, enhanced motion controls, and a revised magnetic attachment system.

Nintendo has also updated its signature Joy-Con controllers. While still detachable, the new design focuses on improved ergonomics and build quality. Enhanced responsiveness and refined motion controls are expected, along with better durability. These updates address common user complaints about Joy-Con drift and connectivity issues. The magnetic attachment system has also been refined to provide a more secure and consistent connection with the console.

Though Nintendo has not officially confirmed the launch titles, industry analysts expect key franchises like Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon to be showcased with upgraded versions or entirely new entries to demonstrate the Switch 2’s power. Backward compatibility has been widely rumored, suggesting the new console may support existing Switch game cartridges and digital titles. This could make it easier for players to upgrade without leaving behind their libraries.

Retailers prepare for the upcoming release of the Switch 2, with existing Nintendo Switch models still available in stores.

The Switch 2 is expected to launch at a time when the gaming market is highly competitive, but also ripe for innovation. The original Switch has sold over 130 million units worldwide, and Nintendo is hoping to carry that momentum forward with a more powerful and refined system. The addition of modern display technology and upgraded output capabilities will likely appeal to longtime fans as well as new users looking for a versatile console.

Retailers are expected to open preorders soon. Industry experts predict high demand at launch, with potential supply shortages similar to previous major console releases. Nintendo has not yet released pricing details or information about bundles, but those announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
