Rockstar Games has officially delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026. The game, originally expected to launch in fall 2025, will now arrive nearly 13 years after the release of GTA V. The announcement was met with disappointment from fans and had immediate ripple effects throughout the gaming industry.
The delay was attributed to the need for additional development time. Rockstar is known for its high production standards and has historically taken a "when it's ready" approach to game development. While the company has not disclosed specific technical reasons for the postponement, it emphasized that the extra time will allow the team to deliver the level of quality expected from the franchise.
Investor confidence appeared to take a hit following the news. Shares of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, fell by as much as 8 percent. Analysts say the delay could affect not only fiscal projections for Take-Two but also influence the release schedules of other publishers hoping to avoid direct competition with one of the most anticipated games of the decade.

Rockstar Games, known for titles like Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto V, cites the need for more development time in delaying GTA VI. |
Set in a fictional state inspired by Florida called Leonida, GTA 6 will feature dual protagonists, including Lucia, a character seen in the game's reveal trailer. The game is expected to revisit Vice City and expand the series' open-world formula with a modern take that incorporates elements of contemporary culture, including social media and evolving in-game economies.
The delay also raises questions about the timeline for a PC release. Rockstar has a history of prioritizing console versions, often leaving PC gamers waiting months or even years. Given the extended delay for the initial launch, some in the community now speculate that a PC version of GTA 6 may not arrive until 2027 or later.
Despite frustration among fans, the delay may work in Rockstar's favor. Industry trends have shown that rushed launches often lead to backlash, poor reviews, and long-term damage to brand reputation. By taking additional time, Rockstar aims to avoid those pitfalls and deliver a game that lives up to its massive hype.
