Google to Invest $1 Billion in Thai Data Center and Cloud Infrastructure

Google has announced plans to invest $1 billion to establish a new data center and cloud infrastructure in Thailand, a major move that underscores the country's growing importance in Southeast Asia's digital economy.

The project will include the construction of a data center facility and the development of a Google Cloud region, designed to meet the rising demand for cloud services and artificial intelligence technologies across the region. This will be Google's first cloud region in Thailand, adding to its expanding footprint in Asia.

The investment is expected to create an estimated 14,000 jobs per year through 2029, spanning roles in construction, technology services, and operational support. Thai officials say the initiative aligns with the government’s broader goals to strengthen digital infrastructure under the Cloud First Policy, a strategy aimed at making cloud computing the default for public sector IT operations.

Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, stated that the investment is a reflection of Google's long-term commitment to Thailand's digital future. She emphasized that robust infrastructure is essential to unlocking the economic opportunities that digital transformation can bring.

The new Google Cloud region will enable faster and more reliable access to Google’s services, supporting industries such as finance, retail, manufacturing, and public sector projects. It will also provide advanced cybersecurity tools, critical as digital threats grow more complex.

Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor, particularly in the provinces of Chonburi, Rayong, and Chachoengsao, has been identified as a prime location for the data center project. The area is already being developed as a major hub for technology and innovation in the region.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra welcomed the investment, saying it will enhance Thailand’s role as a digital hub for ASEAN and accelerate economic development across multiple sectors.

Google’s move follows a broader trend of major technology companies investing heavily in Thailand’s digital economy. Recent expansions from companies like Microsoft, TikTok, and regional data service providers have positioned Thailand as a critical center for cloud and AI infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

Construction on the Google data center is expected to begin later this year, with full operations targeted within the next two to three years.
